Course Descriptions
Calibration Training
A two-day training course covering the calibration of Ludlum instruments. Attendees will receive hands-on experience calibrating four generations of Ludlum instrumentation — the Model 3, the Model 2241, the Model 3000, and the Model 26-1. The class will also include a detailed introduction to Ludlum detectors and how to properly pair them with Ludlum instrumentation.
This course is intended for customers interested in performing their own calibrations. It is generally not intended for first-responders or survey technicians since it does not cover the health physics aspects of radiation surveying.
The course is held at Ludlum's main facility in Sweetwater, Texas and at Protean Instrument in Knoxville, Tennessee several times throughout the year. It is offered at no charge; however, attendees are responsible for their own lodging and meals.
This course is offered several times throughout the year. Scheduled classes are held Tuesdays & Wednesdays, and classes start at 8:30 AM each day. (see schedule)
Note: Prior health physics training is recommended.
Cost: Free
Instrument Repair Training
A two-day training course covering the electronics information necessary to repair hand-held radiation detection equipment. Designed for users who would like to make their own repairs, this course provides a review of electronic components and the different types of circuits found in radiation detection instrumentation, including examples from Ludlum meters.
The course is held at Ludlum's main facility in Sweetwater, Texas and at Protean Instrument in Knoxville, Tennessee several times throughout the year. The course fee includes lunch each day; attendees are responsible for all other travel and accommodation expenses.
This course is offered several times throughout the year. Scheduled classes are held Thursdays & Fridays, and classes start at 8:30 AM each day. (see schedule)
Note: A background in electronics is a prerequisite for this class to be useful to the participant. The student needs to understand the operation of an oscilloscope and digital multimeter.
Cost: $750 per attendee
Radiation Detection Fundamentals New
A two-day course covering the practical use of Ludlum radiation detection instruments. Designed for operators, technicians, and safety personnel, this course focuses on building confidence in everyday use of radiation detection instruments, whether you are new to radiation detection or want to strengthen your understanding of how different detectors work.
Through guided labs and demonstrations, you will learn how to set up, operate, and interpret readings from Ludlum instruments. You will also learn the principles behind common detector types, how to troubleshoot typical challenges, and the real-world context for using the equipment in the field.
This course is hosted at Ludlum’s main facility in Sweetwater, Texas. It is offered at no charge; however, attendees are responsible for their own lodging and meals.
This course is offered several times throughout the year. Scheduled classes are held Tuesdays & Wednesdays, and classes start at 8:30 AM each day. (see schedule)

Ludlum Measurements Facility Tour
All classes in Sweetwater include a Ludlum Measurements facility tour. Attendees have the opportunity to get an inside look at our manufacturing plant, where Ludlum has engineered and built radiation detection equipment since the 1960s. The tour also includes visiting our military-grade testing facilities to see how instruments are evaluated for durability, accuracy, and field readiness.
