Disinfecting Ludlum Instruments and Detectors

In the event that it becomes necessary to disinfect one of our instruments or detectors, please use following the guidelines.

Instruments

The exterior of instruments can be wiped down with a disinfecting alcohol wipe. Before cleaning, turn off instruments and unplug power and/or remove removable batteries. Labels, silkscreening, and paint can withstand the alcohol without damage. Be careful to not allow liquid to puddle and run into crevices or openings. Allow instruments to dry completely before returning to service.

The interior of instruments can be cleaned in the same manner but ensure that the instrument is turned off, power has been removed, and all circuits are dead. Some instruments have internal backup batteries: these batteries should be disconnected before cleaning.

Detectors

The exterior of all detectors can be wiped down with a disinfecting alcohol wipe, with the exception of radiation entrance windows. Any physical contact with the mylar or mica windows can result in damage to the windows. Before cleaning, disconnect the detector. Labels, silkscreening, and paint can withstand the alcohol without damage. Be careful to not allow liquid to puddle and run into crevices or openings. Removable screens and covers can be removed and wiped down. Allow instruments to dry completely before returning to service.

Cables, Cords, Etc.

The exterior of all cables and cords can be wiped down with a disinfecting alcohol wipe. Before cleaning, disconnect the cables/cords. Be careful to not allow liquid to puddle and run into crevices or openings. Allow cables/cords to dry completely before returning to service.

Cleaning with Bleach

Bleach wipes can be used if necessary, but some cosmetic damage to finishes and labels may occur. If used on electrical circuits or contacts, any bleach residue should be wiped off of circuits as soon as possible.
